Which version of ActiveSync / Windows Mobile Device Centre are you on?
Most problems with Microsoft ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Centre (WMDC) can be solved out by installing the latest versions, which v4.5 for ActiveSync and 6.1 for WMDC.
To check your version number:

Open ActiveSync and click Help → About Microsoft ActiveSync.

Open WMDC and click Help → About Windows Mobile Device Centre.

If you use ActiveSync and don't have the latest version (4.5), click here to visit Microsoft's ActiveSync download page.
If you use WMDC and don't have the latest version (6.1), click here to visit Microsoft's WMDC download page.

You're on the latest version, but are still having problems
Please disconnect your Pocket PC, restart your desktop and Pocket PC (how?), then plug your Pocket PC back in. If you still have problems after this, please uninstall The Mobile Agent for Pocket PC (how?), reinstall ActiveSync /Windows Mobile Device Centre from the links above, then reinstall The Mobile Agent for Pocket PC from here.
If that still doesn't work ...
